Taps Across America

This afternoon at 3:00, Camp Florida paused for the National Moment of Remembrance to honor our fallen soldiers by coming together to listen to “Taps,” followed by a minute of silent reflection, then Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” There were then some solemn words from Rockie:

“Hundreds of thousands of soldiers have died for our freedoms. The best way to show our respect is to live our lives so we are worthy of their sacrifice.”

CF Summer Activities

We know that things start to slow down around here as our winter residents start to leave. But, don’t despair! There are still plenty of things to do at Camp Florida during the summer.

We have created a “Summer Activities” page that you can find in the website menu below our “Upcoming Special Events” menu item.

We will also do our best to keep you informed about events in the Lake Placid community, such as the Caladium Festival (which is always a big hit with the CF summer crowd). Check the Summer Activities page often to make sure you don’t miss any of the fun!

Are These Birds Better at Fishing than Humans?

One evening by Grassy Lake can present you with a ton of things to watch, particularly birds that do a great job of fishing! On one recent evening, a Great Egret, two Anhingas and an Osprey apparently had a lot of luck. Although the Anhingas had already finished their deep dives, they looked happy as they dried off their wings (they don’t have oil on their feathers, so they have to dry off in order to be able to fly). To top off the day, a couple of Brown Pelicans flew overhead, apparently looking for a tasty meal. Those of you who have traveled back up north are missing out on what is apparently a great angling opportunity! Those who are still here might want to get out there while the fish are biting (or while the birds are biting the fish?).
